Since you are going to be using an upholstery stapler quite a bit I often assume that you already have one and I talk a lot about using a pneumatic upholstery stapler in your projects but I often forget you might not have a crucial component for this – an air compressor! Luckily one of our partners, Tool King, has an awesome deal on this Porter-Cable combo kit – $199.95!

The compressor works very simply and easily to connect to your upholstery stapler via a standard air tubing and will generally run on 90 to 100lbs of pressure.  This amount of pressure will drive the staple through your upholstery stapler efficiently and smoothly.

I hope you don’t mind that I sometimes post related tools and products you might find especially useful in your home projects/remodeling work.

Read more below or click on the link to get in on this great deal! (note the combo does not come with the actual upholstery stapler as this is a finish nailer that is included)

So throughout my experience with projects I am undoubtedly asked where I learned how to do what I do and to be honest it was not through some magical innate ability or master teacher but a book.  Yes a book.  This book is probably one of the most used books in my house from the sense of it being like a cook book.  You have to have a favorite cook book that has just got tons of food stains, water marks and sticky pages right?  Well this is my cook book per se.  This book, Reupholstering at Home: A Do-It-Yourself Manual for Turning Old Furniture into New Showpieces, is the perfect starting point.

If you check the reviews on Amazon.com you will see that it really takes you through the steps of learning how to use an upholstery stapler and basically covers everything I have been writing on my blog.  It does not matter if you are using a manual, electric or pneumatic stapler as the techniques and tips he advises will be relevant no matter what.

I recommend, other than reading my blog and articles of course, to get the book and use it as your new stepping stone to learning the trade even if it is just for home / hobby use.

The Porter-Cable US58 1/4-Inch to 5/8-Inch 22-Gauge C-Crown Upholstery Stapler is without a doubt one of the most highly regarded and reviewed upholstery staplers on the market.

Amazon description:

The Porter-Cable US58 1/4-Inch to 5/8-Inch, 22-Gauge C-Crown Upholstery Stapler is an easy to use pneumatic stapler with plenty of useful features. It uses standard Senco C Type 22-gauge, 3/8-inch crown staples to get the job done right, and it includes a 1-inch nose extension for those tough to reach areas. The high-capacity bottom-load magazine handles 185 staples, and the driver guide moves back to easily clear jams from the magazine. The US58 stapler requires 70-120 PSI air pressure, so it will work with most air compressors.

Technical Details

  • High-capacity pneumatic upholstery stapler with 185 staple magazine
  • Uses Senco C Type, 22-gauge, 3/8-inch staples from 1/4 to 5/8 inches long
  • Quick and easy jam-clearing mechanism
  • Measures six inches tall and nine inches long; weighs 2 pounds
  • Includes a 1/4-inch air fitting with dust cover and oil

Personally, based on the reviews (4.5 out of 5 with almost 60 reviews) I would be inclined to buy this upholstery stapler over anything else.  Make sure, as with my other blog posts, you ensure that you have an air compressor which will pump out enough pressure for this baby.  If you don't have one visit Tool King to get a great deal on one.

What staples to use in an upholstery stapler

Devon from North Dakota writes:

"Nick -
I just got my first pneumatic upholstery stapler and am wondering what kind of staples you recommend using in it? I'm going to be fixing some old antique chairs so it has got make it look good but retain the "unique" look. Let me know

Devon"

Well Devon that's actually a pretty good question and one that I only answered myself from years of working on projects myself (with many mistakes I may add!) Anyway the point is that now you do not have to make those same mistakes as you can learn from me!  First make sure you have the right type of upholstery stapler for the job (see some of my related posts on figuring that out).  Once you've figured that out the staples should be fine wire 7 series for the best fit and finish.

The fine wire 7 staple will not take too much of the fabric nor too little thus producing the best look.  I highly recommend using Tool King to purchase any hardware related products for your project.  Readers of my blog always get the best deals by clicking through my links – it's a special arrangement I've built just for you guys!

I often get asked which are the best upholstery stapler brands and to that question I don't honestly have a great answer since there are so many different ones.  What I usually say is to stick with a brand that you really know and love.  Personally I love Airlocker, Fasco and Bostitch.  Make sure when you buy one that you stick with the pneumatic variety of upholstery staplers since the electric ones just don't cut it.

Bostitch

Easily one of the most recognized names in the tool industry, Bostitch upholstery staplers are one of the most durable and highest quality you can possibly lay your hands on!

Air Locker

Air Locker seems primarily focused on the air tool market which helps in producing a highly focused product designed to do only a few things extremely well.  They have a large assortment of different products for your air compressor.

Fasco

Fasco upholstery staplers are another one of my favorites having used them personally in a reupholstery project of my own (I took an old worn out sofa and completely re did it!).  Their quality is easily up there with Bostitch and I can't recommend them enough!

I personally buy all my tools from Tool King and if you follow the link below there is a special free shipping offer for readers of Upholstery Stapler!

So you've got an old, crappy worn out sofa or love seat you're just going to throw out.  What are you made of money?  I don't think so!  With the current economic climate and things not getting better why are you not just fixing that chair up?  Most people simply don't know how easy it is to reupholster a chair and make it look brand spanking new.  You see adding some new fabric to a worn out, tired looking chair can really make a difference and possibly salvage the sucker.

To get started on your first project choose a relatively easy, small chair to work on.  If you don't then find a piece of particle board or something you can upholster using a upholstery stapler.  Once you've found your piece of furniture or wood to work on you're going to need to measure it and come up with a fabric amount.  After determining how much fabric you need add 1 inch to the total size.  By adding more than you need you can easily trim excess fabric but use too little and that upholstery stapler will simply eat it all up! Watch the following video to learn how to cut fabric:

After you've gotten the fabric ready the next step is to load your upholstery stapler up with staples and start from one end of the chair moving slowly through the fabric and stapling it to the chair.  Always allow excess fabric but make sure the chair and new cover is pulled tightly together.  If you don't have an upholstery stapler I've included some links below to help you get started and find one.

Once the new fabric is completely fastened in place the next step is to take a utility knife and very gently trim excess fabric from the brand  new chair you've just given life too!  Going green isn't just about solar and cars but changing the way we treat the earth and giving life to something that may have ended up in the garbage heap!

Best Upholstery Stapler

Often times we get asked which is the best upholstery stapler for me?  This can be a hard question to answer since most of the models currently on the market will accomplish what you are looking to do.  The best upholstery stapler is also a matter of opinion and based on your own perception.

Our experience with the best upholstery stapler comes from product research and browsing through the amazon links.  With so many different upholstery staplers how do you know which one is the best? When ordering don't forget the staples!

Bostitch Upholstery Stapler

Bostitch Upholstery Stapler

In the tool world, Bostitch is one of the highest recognized names when it comes to staplers and to be honest a Bostitch upholstery stapler may be one of the best upholstery staplers on the market today.  Thanks to being in the market for so long and with such expertise, a Bostich upholstery stapler is really one of the premier multi purpose tools we recommend here at upholstery-stapler.com  With a Bostitch upholstery stapler you are guaranteed one of the most durable, highly effective staplers on the market today with support from a world class company.  If you plan on buying a Bostitch upholstery stapler then you probably already know just how important it is that the tool be sturdy and strong enough to withstand a ton of everyday use.

Bostitch Upholstery Stapler Usage

Using a Bostitch upholstery stapler is relatively easy and produces excellent results.  There are many different upholstery stapler models available by Bostitch depending on your needs.  Most Bostitch upholstery staplers run on a pneumatic system meaning they require an air compressor. If you do not have an air compressor for your Bostitch upholstery stapler you will certainly want to start looking at one as a potential investment.  I have used a Bostitch upholstery stapler in the past with phenomenal results and to be honest they are one of the premier brands on the market today.  Although their prices tend to be a bit more on the expensive side you will find that they are much more suited for a commercial environment than say the home remodel kind of job.  That is not to say that someone who is into a spot of the home remodel can't do well with it just that it might be a little bit of overkill for small jobs.

Fasco Upholstery Stapler

A Fasco upholstery stapler is known in the industry as one of the heaviest duty upholstery staplers you can find.  Operating off a pneumatic system, the Fasco upholstery stapler is many times also a multi-purpose stapler that can be used in a myriad of different ways.  Using a Fasco upholstery stapler will produce excellent results on your furniture or carpeting project.  Since the Fasco upholstery stapler uses an air compressor you will need to make sure you have a suitable unit available to you.

Pneumatic Upholstery Stapler

By far some of the most popular upholstery staplers are pneumatic.  A pneumatic upholstery stapler is one that runs off of compressed air.  The reason pneumatic upholstery staplers are so popular is due to the speed/velocity at which the compressed air can send the staple into it's destination.  To use a pneumatic upholstery stapler you will need to have access to an air compressor (typically found for around $100 – see below).  Once you have hooked up your pneumatic upholstery stapler to the air compressor turn it on and staple away!  Here are some of the top ones we recommend:
